Majors
Classics majors may choose one of four options. Those who wish to concentrate on one or both ancient languages may choose an option in ancient Greek and Latin, ancient Greek, or Latin. The Classical Humanities option is designed for students who would like to gain a broad knowledge of the history, literature and culture of the Classical world.
A student who pursues the Classical Humanities option must take 36 credits in the department, including at least one course in Greek or Latin language at the 200 level or above and at least six Classics courses (ie Greek, Latin, or Classical Humanities) at the 300 level or above. Approved Classical Humanities courses from other departments may be counted toward this total. Please see catalog for the specific set of required courses.
A student who pursues the Greek option must take 35 credits in the department, of which 26 credits must be in the ancient Greek language. At least six courses must be at the 300 level or above.
A student who pursues the Greek and Latin option must take 35 credits in the department, of which 29 credits must be in the ancient Greek and Latin languages. The credits may be distributed between the two languages, but at least 11 credits must be taken in each language. At least six courses must be at the 300 level or above.
A student who pursues the Latin option must take 35 credits in the department,
of which 26 credits must be in the Latin language. At least six courses must
be at the 300 level or above.
Minors
A minor in Classical humanities requires a minimum of seven courses, of which at least three must be at the 300 level or above. Please see catalog for the specific set of required courses.
A minor in Ancient Greek requires a minimum of six courses, including at least three at the 300 level or above.
A minor in Latin requires a minimum of six courses, including at least three at the 300 level or above.

DepartmentalHonors in classics may be earned by eligible students who wish to work on an independent or team project chosen with the help of an adviser. To qualify, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and a grade-point average of 3.4 or better in the major at the end of the junior year. At that time, students should formally apply to the chairperson. They should enroll in 01:190:495, 496 (8 credits) in the senior year, or in the last term of the junior year if in the secondary education program, and should discuss their projects with their advisers by the end of the first term of the junior year.
