Welcome to the Department of Classics
Rutgers University
The Rutgers Department of Classics aims to
provide, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, a comprehensive
approach to Greco-Roman antiquity (second millennium BCE to the
end of the sixth
century CE). Courses for majors and graduate students focus on
the interpretation of the original texts in Latin and Greek in
the light of discipline-specific methodologies.
The Department regularly offers: beginning, intermediate, advanced,
and graduate courses in the ancient Greek and Latin languages;
courses in translation dealing with classical civilization; graduate
seminars in classical philology and related disciplines; and opportunities
for independent study in each of these areas.
Undergraduate major and minor programs are
offered in ancient Greek and Latin, ancient Greek, Latin, and
Classical Humanities. Graduate training is provided in programs
leading to the degrees of M.A., M.A.T., and
Ph.D. As part of the state university, the Department recognizes
a special relationship and obligation to the teachers of Latin
in New Jersey high schools.
